USK Launches Eco Campus (USK Luncurkan Eco Campus)
Syiah Kuala University (USK) in collaboration with the Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF) officially launched the Eco Campus Sustainability Action Nexus (ESCAN). This launching took place at the FMIPA Hall on Tuesday, August 12, 2024.
This moment coincides with World Youth Day 2024. The presence of Eco Campus is a transformative force in global education for sustainable development.

Head of USK's Office of International Affairs (OIA), Dr. Muzailin Affan, M.Sc explained, ESCAN is the first network in its category that unites Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and Teacher Education Institutions (TEI) throughout the world under a common mission: to embed sustainability in every aspect of academic life.
"This programme is designed to empower students, educators and institutions to lead the fight against climate change and environmental degradation through a holistic, action-oriented approach to sustainability," said Muzailin.
The launch of ESCAN is in line with USK's 63rd anniversary commemoration and its long-term commitment to environmental management.
USK Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ir. Marwan said that over the years, his campus has implemented various environmentally friendly initiatives, including banning single-use plastic, promoting reusable cups, and building a waste management system.
"This effort reflects USK's goal to become an example of a Green Campus, and instill a high level of environmental awareness in its students," said the Chancellor.
According to him, ESCAN is not just an initiative but a movement that will integrate sustainability into institutional structures.
"At USK, we have taken significant steps towards sustainability, and by joining the ESCAN community, we are even more committed to protecting our planet for future generations," said Prof Marwan.
Executive Director of the Green Growth Asia Foundation, Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr. Mahadi Mohamad, one of the speakers at that moment, also highlighted ESCAN's vision and potential impact. ESCAN is a visionary initiative, the first of its kind, and we are proud to co-found it with USK.
“By fostering a culture of sustainability, innovation, and collaboration, ESCAN will prepare our students for green jobs, entrepreneurship and leadership roles in the future,” said Datuk Mahadi.
